ROUSHA BROWNING

PLAYWRIGHT & SCREENWRITER

ABOUT ME

Born and raised in East London, I'm a neurodivergent comedy-drama writer who loves creating strong, unique female characters and intricate stories. I’m eternally inspired by the metaphysical, psychological and spiritual aspects of life and love to incorporate these elements into the stories I write. I'm passionate about collaboration, inspiring others' creative endeavours and being a cheerleader for anyone attempting to follow their dreams.

I have been shortlisted for numerous BBC Drama & Comedy Writers Rooms, and was selected for BBC London Voices 2020 with the first ever script written with co-writer Shakir Kadri.

Shakir and I met through our shared love of comedy whilst working together at a TV production company. This spurred on years of writing bold, challenging, funny characters and stories. We were mentored by playwright Enda Walsh and signed by Curtis Brown.

We received 5 sketch commissions from BBC Studios for ‘BBC3’s Famalam’ and in 2023 we were commissioned by Indian based production company Golden Ratio Films to write our original idea feature film, ‘Double Twenty’. In 2024 we were commissioned by Resource Productions in association with BFI, Amazon, Reading University and Screen Berkshire to write and produce our short film ‘Kitty Party’ starring Nimra Bucha and Shaheen Khan.

I have a history of stand up comedy, performed all around the UK, and took solo shows ‘Jumble Sale’ and ‘Rousha Browning Presents: Presence’ to The Leicester Comedy Festival and to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. With my passion and love of comedy I produced over 500 live shows, which included running my own comedy events and working for comedy promoter Heroes of Fringe across several venues and festivals. I am a member of Gobby Girls, a collective of women in comedy helping change the industry to become more inclusive.

In recent years I’ve turned my attention to write for the stage again, inspired from working at The Kiln Theatre, Leicester Square Theatre and working as the General Manager at SCRUM Theatre. I’ve been developing many ideas and I’m excited by a new play I’m writing called ‘The Hermit’ which will have a debut showing in December 2026.
